Sod is a plant, it requires at least four hours of sunlight to survive. However, there are some variations of sod that shade tolerant such as St. Augustine: Provista, Bitter Blue, Seville, and our Zoysia grass. If an area is too shady even for weeds to grow we recommend not using sod and utilizing mulch or rocks.
All of our sods will perform well in full sunlight if adequately irrigated, treated, and well maintained.
Yes, sod can be installed while dormant. The establishment period will be longer since the grass is not actively growing, but once the weather warms and with proper maintenance the sod will thrive.
Bahia grass has the lowest maintenance; it grows well with very little water and fertilization. Bahia is the only option for sites with no irrigation. Bahia is pasture grass and grows on its own, however, it can have ants, weeds, and appear brown and hay-like.
Empire Zoysia is another semi-low maintenance grass when compared to St. Augustine. It does however require irrigation and treatment to keep it maintained.

Water your new sod immediately after installation. Follow the link provided from the University of Florida that explains how to properly water to establish a new lawn:

The best time of day to water your lawn is early morning. Later in the day will result in unnecessary evaporation and late in the evening will cause standing water which can lead to fungus and other diseases.
For the best results set your irrigation system so that the last zone finishes 1 hour prior to sunrise. This will give the water a chance to seep into the soil as needed and any excess will be evaporated during the day reducing the chances of disease or fungus.
During the first month it is not recommended to fertilize or treat your sod unless you have pests, such as grubs, webworms, or a disease, most commonly fungus. After the establishment period we recommend getting a professional lawn treatment service to maintain a healthy yard for years to come. We also recommend a treatment called "Milorganite". This product can be found at any Lowes, Home Depot, Walmart, or Ace.
If you notice your sod is not performing well within the first weeks, please check that your irrigation system is getting complete coverage of your lawn. Take pictures of the problem areas and contact us. We are here to work with you not against you.
