Every piece is cut 16" x 24" and covers 2.67 sq ft. Half and full pallets are available on every variety.

A new lawn isn't complicated — it's heavy work, done in order.

Sod is living grass — the sooner it's down and watered, the better it roots. Level your soil before pickup or delivery, lay the pieces tight with staggered seams, then soak it within the first hour. Order online to reserve your cut — DIY, or have our crew install.

05 steps · one weekend

From bare dirt to rooted lawn, in the order that actually works.

Cut Sod-X sod pieces stacked at the yard

Measure and plan

  • Break the yard into simple shapes — rectangles, triangles, circles.
  • Multiply length by width for each, then add them up.
  • Round up about 10% for cuts, curves, and mistakes.
  • Confirm sun, foot traffic, irrigation, and which variety actually fits the spot.

Order a little extra. Sod doesn't wait around for a second trip.

Clear and prepare

  • Strip old grass, weeds, roots, rocks, and debris down to bare dirt.
  • Fix the spots that hold water before they become the spots that kill grass.
  • Rake and hand-grade until the bed is smooth, firm, and level.

Big removal or a real regrade? That's an estimate, not a Saturday.

Order the Sod

  • Book pickup or delivery for the day you're installing — not the day before.
  • Line up labor, tools, a wheelbarrow, and a clear path to the yard before the truck shows up.
  • Keep pallets shaded and start laying as soon as it lands.

Sod is a living plant on the clock. The faster it's down, the better it roots.

A finished St. Augustine lawn laid edge to edge

Lay tight and stagger

  • Start along your straightest edge — driveway, walkway, or fence line.
  • Butt every piece tight. No gaps, no overlap.
  • Stagger the seams row to row, like laying brick.
  • Cut clean around curves, beds, and irrigation heads.

Loose seams and stretched pieces cause most of the callbacks we see — and both are avoidable.

Water and establish

  • Water it within the first hour, before the tools go back in the truck.
  • Keep the sod and the soil underneath it consistently moist while roots take hold.
  • Hold off mowing until it resists a gentle tug, then cut at the height your variety wants.

Weather, soil, and sprinkler coverage all change the math. When in doubt, water more, not less.

Pro tip

Start early, stay hydrated, uncoil the hose before the pallet lands.

First water. First roots. First mow.

First hour

Water goes down right after the sod does. Not soggy — soaked.

Establishment

Keep the top inch of soil and sod consistently moist. Deep and steady beats quick and frequent.

First mow

Wait for root resistance — tug a corner, and if it holds, you're clear. Cut at your variety's height, never more than a third of the blade.

Call the crew if…

  • Old sod, stumps, or a full regrade stand between you and bare dirt.
  • Drainage needs real correction, not a patch.
  • Access is tight, or the property's big.
  • Your timeline's tighter than your schedule allows.
  • It's a commercial job.

DIY questions

The questions that come up before Saturday.

How much extra sod should I order?

Add about 10% on top of your measured square footage. Irregular edges and cuts eat more material than people expect.

How fast do I need to install after pickup or delivery?

Same day. Sod is a living plant — the sooner it's down and watered, the better it roots.

What can actually carry a full pallet?

A full pallet is too heavy for a pickup bed — plan on a flatbed, a trailer, or our delivery truck.

Can I lay sod during a Florida summer?

Yes — just plan on watering more. Hot months mean more frequent watering to keep roots from drying out before they take hold.

What do I do if my seams start opening up?

Press them back together and water the area right away. If it keeps happening, call the yard — it usually points to a grading or moisture issue underneath, not a laying mistake.
